How do I change the Wi-Fi channel if there is interference on my Wi-Fi network?

Are you having trouble with unstable internet connection over Wi-Fi, even if you receive a strong Wi-Fi signal? Interference from other networks in the vicinity may be the cause. Changing the current Wi-Fi channel can help you with this issue.

How can I recognize that my WI-FI network is interfered and should I change the setting?

Try connecting to the internet via cable.

Connect your router and laptop with a network cable and test the quality of your internet connection again. If the internet works fine when connected via cable, the cause is your wireless connection.

Use a program to analyse nearby Wi-Fi networks.

For example, we recommend Wi-Fi Analyzer, which is available for Android phones and Windows PCs. Among other things, the program will show you what channels Wi-Fi networks in your area are broadcasting on and help you choose the optimal (free) channel for your network.

Unfortunately, iOS devices don’t have any usable analyzers so for iOS users, you have to go try the different channel by try and error method.

There may be more reasons for slower internet connections, see our overview. If you're looking for general tips on setting up your home Wi-Fi network, we've put them together on this page.

What are Wi-Fi channels and when can my network be interfered with?

  • In order to be able to operate multiple Wi-Fi networks in one area, there are 13 channels on the 2.4 GHz frequency on which individual routers broadcast the Wi-Fi signal. To simplify it, this means that if you find the signal of three other Wi-Fi networks from your neighbors in your apartment, ideally each of them should work on a different broadcast channel so that they do not interfere with each other.
  • If two or more networks use the same broadcast channel, Wi-Fi networks may interfere with each other, resulting in connection drops, reduced speeds, etc.
  • Most routers set the Wi-Fi channel automatically and choose the best option, but sometimes manual intervention is needed.
  • We recommend avoiding channels 1, 6 and 11, which are used by the modem for automatic channel selection.
  • In the Czech Republic, you can also choose channels 12 and 13 for most routers. However, these are banned in some countries, so some devices might not be able to find your Wi-Fi network if you use them.
  • In the case of 5 GHz Wi-Fi, there is virtually no need to worry about interference with surrounding networks. If such a situation were to occur and the 5 GHz network needed static settings, We recommend to set the channel below 100.
  • The advantage of this frequency, apart from its capacity, is also the higher speeds achievable. The downside is a lower network range and not all devices can work with 5GHz Wi-Fi.

How do I change the Wi-Fi channel on my router?

Have you found that the cause of your connection problems is related to interference from other networks? You can find instructions on how to change the transmitting channel in the manual for your Wi-Fi router (modem). For information on setting up the modems we sell, see the page dedicated to your device - choose from the list below.
