Vodafone has covered all of Prague with high-speed mobile Internet and by September will have it in most regional capitals

15. June 2010

Vodafone expanded its high-speed 3G mobile Internet to cover all of Prague. The capital is, after Brno and Karlovy Vary, the third city entirely covered with high-speed mobile data. By the end of September, Vodafone will launch 3G in seven more large cities and several smaller communities. New and current Vodafone customers in Prague, Brno and Karlovy Vary can now try high-speed mobile Internet out for free for one month. “When building the high-speed 3G network we placed a lot of emphasis on its optimization so that we could guarantee the highest quality of voice and data services on offer,” says Pavel Kos, Vice-President for Technology at Vodafone Czech Republic.

“When building the high-speed 3G network we placed a lot of emphasis on its optimization so that we could guarantee the highest quality of voice and data services on offer,” says Pavel Kos, Vice-President for Technology at Vodafone Czech Republic.

By March 2011, Vodafone plans to gradually roll out high-speed mobile Internet in thirty to forty large cities in the country.

By the end of September, Vodafone is launching its 3G network in the following regional cities: Ostrava, Olomouc, Hradec Králové, Zlín, Plzeň, Ústí nad Labem and Liberec and then in the following communities: Šenov, Vratimov, Petřvald, Příbram, Napajedla, Otrokovice, Starý Plzenec, Jablonec nad Nisou, Chlumec, Sokolov and Prostějov.

Vodafone is using the newest HSPA (High Speed Packet Access) technology from Huawei to run its 3G network. That technology allows mobile Internet connections with speeds of up to 7.2 Mb/s for download and up to 2 Mb/s upload.

Thanks to 3G, customers will be able to surf the Internet from their notebook or from their mobile phone realistically 10 to 15 times faster than with the previous EDGE technology. Customers won’t pay anything extra for this increase in speed, as 3G will be part of the current data tariff scheme.

The ‘Connect for Good’ data tariff, which is ideal for surfing and downloading larger amounts of data, can now be tried out by customers in Prague, Brno and Karlovy Vary for free for one month. If they then decide to continue to use the service, they get a practical USB modem for laptop Internet connections for the discounted price of CZK 77.

Aside from its 3G network, Vodafone also offers its 2G – EDGE network, which is now available to more than 95% of the Czech population.

About Vodafone Czech Republic

Vodafone (originally Oskar) won its license to operate a mobile GSM telecommunications network in October 1999. Shortly thereafter, it became the fastest growing operator and set a new record in the history of GSM – in 9 months it covered 98% of the Czech population with its signal. In 2002, the company reached the one million-customer mark and, in 2005, it won the license to build and operate a 3G network. In the same year, it became part of the world’s leading telecommunications company, Vodafone Group. Today, it provides services for more than three million corporate and retail customers. The company is also active in Corporate Social Responsibility and, in 2006, established the Vodafone Czech Republic Foundation, through which it has already distributed more than CZK 50 million to the nonprofit sector.
