Vodafone enriches its car fleet with hybrids

09. December 2008

Vodafone Czech Republic is adding five Toyota Prius hybrids to its car fleet. It’s one of the first three private Czech companies to add cars with dramatically lower fuel consumption and production of carbon oxides to their car fleets. After having purchased Green Energy from the ČEZ group and increased the energy efficiency of the network, it’s another step toward fulfilling the promise of reducing CO2 emissions by half by 2020. “Vodafone is aware of the negative impact of global warming and is pursuing specific activities to reduce CO2 emissions. The purchase of five Toyota Prius hybrids and a significant decrease in the fuel consumption of our car fleet is one of the steps that can really help lower emissions,” says Přemysl Filip, Senior Manager for Corporate Responsibility at Vodafone.

The deciding factor to buy the hybrids was mainly behaving responsibly toward the environment while saving money at the same time. Toyota Prius cars have up to 30% lower fuel consumption when compared to classic cars due to their combination combustion and electric engines. They also produce a lot less harmful emissions.

The Toyota Prius has a 1.5 liter gas engine with 57kW of power. The electric engine working in combination with the gas engine has 50kW of power. The combined fuel consumption amounts to 4.3 liters/100 km and CO2 emissions reach only 104 g/km. In over more than 10 years of production, the hybrid technology in the Toyota Prius has won several notable, prestigious awards. This year, for example, it won “Thriftiest Technology” in the British Technology Awards.

Other measures that Vodafone Czech Republic is taking to fulfill the group obligation to reduce carbon oxide emissions by 615 thousand tons a year are:

  • Purchasing Green Energy from the ČEZ group
  • Lowering network energy demand
  • Ecological package transport with DHL’s Go Green program
  • Cooperation with technology and software suppliers to develop energy efficient equipment
