The Public Unveiling of Jiří David’s Key Sculpture will take place on the 9th of March at 11AM on Franz Kafka Square (náměstí Franze Kafky) in Prague

04. March 2010

A six-meter key sculpture by artist Jiří David made from more than 85,000 keys will be unveiled to the public on Tuesday, March 9, at 11 in the morning on Franz Kafka Square in Prague. This “open-air opening” will feature the artist himself in attendance, who wanted to spur public discussion around the twentieth anniversary of the Velvet Revolution by creating this installation. “This object represents a personal polemic on the development of the Czech Republic. It certainly isn’t a tribute but, on the contrary, a critical work. The installation expresses the ambivalence that I feel when I think about today’s society and politics,” says Jiří David.

During the making of the Key Sculpture, people could send their suggestions to the project website as to where they wanted to see the giant installation placed. This "vote" met with great success, as there were a total of 8,673 place suggestions from all over the Czech Republic and even other countries. Prague won out in the end, but the interest was so great in other areas and regions that there is talk of a key sculpture ‘mini-tour’ of large Czech and Moravian cities. The definitive placing of the piece on Franz Kafka Square will depend upon the preparation for the mini-tour. But it’s certain that the key sculpture will remain in Prague for a few months prior to its eventual tour. You can find the latest information at: www.klicovasocha.cz.

The creation of the Key Sculpture was supported by mobile operator, Vodafone, who on the occasion of the twentieth anniversary of November 17, 1989, organized a public collection of keys. Throughout October and November, people from all over the Czech Republic brought in 85,741 keys to Vodafone shops and so created the largest key collection in the world.

Jiří Davidhas, since the second half of the ‘80s distinctively helped to create the look and atmosphere of Czech art. With his paintings full of borrowed brand names and political symbols, he was very significant in forming the postmodern movement of the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, when he began to dedicate himself to installation pieces and writing about the position of artists and art in society. In the 80s, he was one of the founders of the Tvrdohlaví group. Aside from the previously mentioned public installations, he’s been well-received outside the country as well for his photographic exhibitions, Hidden Likenesses and Without Sympathy, for example. Last year he was selected as the most influential artist of the last 20 years by a group of art professionals.
