Thanks mainly to the internet, Czechs increase their mobile use abroad

04. November 2009

During the summer holidays this year, Vodafone customers used their mobiles abroad much more often than last year. Unequivocally the fastest growth, 2.5 times, was seen in the increase in volume of downloaded data; the amount of sent SMS increased by one quarter and the amount of called minutes from abroad increased by ten percent. At the same time, Vodafone recorded a one-fifth increase in users of the Vodafone Passport service, which more than 350 thousand customers have activated since May 2007. “In roaming, we recorded the greatest growth in the interest of data services.

The monthly tariff, Connect Steady from Abroad, and Connect from Abroad for a Day contributed dramatically to this. More than a third of all downloaded data abroad came from customers using these two tariffs,” said Martin Chvátal, Marketing Specialist for Roaming Services at Vodafone.

A year-on-year comparison of Vodafone’s roaming operations between July and August 2008 and 2009 shows that:

  • The volume of downloaded data abroad increased by a factor of 2.5
  • the amount of sent SMS increased by one quarter
  • the amount of called minutes from abroad increased by one-tenth
  • The number of customers using the Vodafone Passport service increased by 20%

In June 2009, as the first operator to do so, Vodafone complied with roaming regulations and went even further by:

  • Establishing only three price zones for all voice and data services
  • Correcting the prices for roaming, even outside the EU, including Croatia, valid from June 19th
  • Lowering the price for 1 MB of downloaded data from CZK 170 to CZK 60 in Zone 1
  • Changing the accounting of all calls in all zones in the Vodafone Passport tariff to 60+1 (originally it was 60+60)

Vodafone offers two voice roaming tariffs - Vodafone World Roaming, which is suited for short calls from abroad and Vodafone Passport, which is better for calls that are longer than two minutes. In addition to the current data tariff, Vodafone also offers the practical Connect Steady from Abroad and Connect from Abroad for a Day tariffs. All tariffs are transparent and divide the world into only three price zones, regardless of which operator customers use to connect from abroad.
