Students spend as much time on mobile Internet as they do making calls

27. July 2009

Already half of Czech students use the Internet on their mobiles. They spend as much time on it as calling or writing SMS. More than 55% of those who use mobile Internet surf for more than 10 minutes a day, while every fifth student spends more than half an hour surfing. More than half of the students use their mobiles more than half an hour a day for calling, SMS, and the Internet, according to the Vodafone Zoom survey. The Internet, whether via computer or mobile phone, has become an almost indispensable part of the daily life of Czech students, according to the survey.

The Internet, whether via computer or mobile phone, has become an almost indispensable part of the daily life of Czech students, according to the survey. More than one-fourth are online constantly and only a few of those questioned rely on a shorter connection to the Internet for less than one hour a day.

During short time periods, when students don’t have access to the classic Internet, they use mobile Internet to search for information or communicate with their friends. This happens most often when traveling (70%) or during breaks at school (43%).

Most students use mobile Internet to:

  • 82% communicate with their friends through social networking sites or instant messaging
  • 73% manage their e-mail
  • 68 % search for information or transport schedules
  • 64 % read the news

One of the most common reasons that students spend so much time on the Internet is the dramatic development of social networking sites. One quarter of students spend more than an hour a day on such portals, while the majority averages half an hour. Almost every student uses not only calling and SMS to communicate, but also use chat on community portals or one of the instant messengers like MSN, ICQ, and Yahoo; and the percentage continues to rise in the use of these services in mobile Internet.

The survey was carried out by Vodafone in cooperation with the Data Collect agency in June 2009, using a representative sample of 600 students between the ages of 15 – 26, who are customers of all mobile networks in the Czech Republic. The survey was carried out for the launch of new student offers from Vodafone: the Student online data package, with which students between the ages of 15 - 26 can have unlimited mobile Internet use for CZK 89 per month, including VAT, and the Student extra voice package, with which any student who uses a Loaded tariff can pay CZK 150 and receive an additional CZK 150 toward calling and SMS.
