Red Alert – Vodafone foundation doubles the DMS help for the starving in East Africa

09. August 2011

The Vodafone Czech Republic Foundation will add CZK 30 to every DMS sent by the customers to help the starving in Somalia – as part of the Red Alert program. This way, the total amount of money collected via DMS will double. In addition, a collection will be organized among the Vodafone employees in August. “By doubling the financial help, we want to motivate the Czech people to send more DMS to help the people struggling with starvation in East Africa. By sending a single DMS, one can provide a two-day ration of flour, sugar and oil for one family,” explains Ondřej Zapletal, the Director of the Vodafone Czech Republic Foundation.

The Vodafone Foundation will add CZK 30 to every DMS sent from 8 to 18 August 2011 to help the starving people in Somalia. The DMS can be sent to 87777 in any of the following forms: DMS SOSSOMALSKO (People in Need foundation), DMS ADRA (Adra foundation) or DMS CHARITACR (Charita Czech Republic).

The goal of the Red Alert is to motivate Vodafone customers to a greater solidarity with people suffering from a serious humanitarian crisis. To achieve this, Vodafone adds a certain financial amount to every DMS. “This program significantly helped to increase the number of DMS sent to humanitarian organizations after the floods in the Czech Republic last year, when it was launched,” says Ondřej Zapletal, the Director of the Vodafone Czech Republic Foundation.

Vodafone will inform its customers about doubling their DMS to help people in Somalia by SMS. Sending one DMS costs CZK 30 (the service is free of VAT), out of which the humanitarian organization gets CZK 27. The Vodafone Foundation has a total budget of CZK 500,000 for this help.
