Beginning on January 27, Oskarta subscribers can use the GPRS technology to surf the Internet and view WAP sites. Unlike competitive services, customers will have access to all of the Internet resources and will not be limited to their operator’s web sites.

GPRS is a 2.5-generation technology which allows high-speed and convenient Internet access. The main benefit of GPRS is volume based billing – as opposed to billing by the minute. Customers will be charged the same low rate whether it takes them a few seconds or an hour to read an email. GPRS is an ideal solution for those who need email and Internet access while out of the office and who do not wish to worry about the time spent on-line.

The rate for WAP over GPRS is set at CZK 0.6 per KB. The Internet rate is CZK 0.06 per KB. Both prices are VAT inclusive.

Prior to the service launch, the quality of GPRS Oskarta and the GPRS network elements have been tested by Technoids as part of the Oskarena project. Oskar’s Technoids, a group of experienced users and fans of mobile technologies, have performed a thorough load test and their comments and experience allowed network fine-tuning.

Technoids are ready to assist customers with handset and computer configuration as well as to guide them through less common configuration procedures. Oskar’s customers can address Technoids free of charge at www.oskarena.cz, where they will also find an extensive archive of tips, tricks and hints to help them make the most of GPRS.

What do you need to get started with GPRS? Every customer needs Oskarta with an account balance in excess of CZK 50 and a GPRS enabled handset. At present, customers can find 7 GPRS enabled phones in Oskar’s handset portfolio. The service can be activated free of charge via Internet Self-Care, via Voice Self-Care at *077 or via SMS Self-Care by sending an SMS short code containing the text “GPRS A personal_password“ to 7700.

Cesky Mobil became the first dual-band (GSM 900/1800) network operator in the Czech Republic after being granted its license in October 1999. It launched commercial operation of its leading edge GSM network on March 1, 2000 under the brand name Oskar. By September 2002 Oskar acquired over 1,139,000 subscribers becoming one of the fastest growing third license operators in Europe! At present, Oskar is the only operator in the Czech Republic to constantly increase its market share.

Through the ClearWave holding, Český Mobil a.s. is a member of the telecommunications group of Canadian-based Telesystem International Wireless (TIW).
