Oskar launches OskarLab program

25. June 2003

OskarZona, Oskarena and the Research and Development Center, the three communities of leading GSM experts associated with Oskar that were formed over the past three years, will now work under the umbrella name OskarLab. The joining of the three teams results in a unique program that is quite unparalelled among Central European operators. The Research and Development Center (RDC, www.rdc.cz) was put in operation in February 2001 as a joint project of Oskar, the Czech Technical University and Ericsson.

RDC supports ambitious students by providing them with a laboratory with state-of-the-art equipment, a fully functional testing network, the expertise of leading GSM professionals and scholarships. At present, more than 50 students are involved in the RDC. The RDC will now be the research platform of the new OskarLab.

OskarZona (www.oskarzona.cz) was launched in July 2002 as the first partnership program of its kind on the Czech market. OskarZona allows independent developers to commercialize their ideas by submitting their applications and games (WAP, SMS and, in the near future, also MMS) to Oskar. Applications of sufficient quality are then offered to Oskar’s customers. Authors of successful applications receive attractive revenue shares. In less than a year since the launch of OskarZona, over 1000 developers have showed interest to join the program. To date, 35 applications have been commercially launched and many of them became instant hits (Sbal Moniku, SMS Trefa, SMS Mise). OskarZona will now serve as the development platform of OskarLab.

Oskarena (www.oskarena.cz) was initiated in October 2001 and offers a forum for interaction betwen Technoids and Oskar’s customers and fans of mobile phones. Technoids intensively use and test Oskar’s services and provide free-of-charge online consultations based on their own experience. www.oskarena.cz features the most extensive database of tips, tricks, and set-up hints to help every Oskar customer make the most of his/her phone. Oskarena will perform the testing function of OskarLab.

Being the umbrella program for RDC, OskarZona and Oskarena, OskarLab combines research, development and testing efforts. It is the most extensive program of cooperation with the professional public ever launched by a mobile operator. “Oskar does not believe in technology for technology’s sake. We will not bring services to market just because the technology exists to do so. Instead, we bring together the best minds in the Czech Republic so the services you use are not only of the highest quality, but are also useful & meaningful. Oskar is the only mobile operator to provide a community-driven approach to supporting its customers. If you have a problem, you have a community of mobile technology buffs to turn to,“ says Igor Přerovský, Oskar’s Director Advertising, Corporate Communication and Spokesperson.
