One-third of the Vodafone network runs on renewable energy

28. January 2010

This year, Vodafone is running its network on 35 percent renewable energy. Thanks to the E.ON Energie company, Vodafone continues to fulfill its pledge to reduce CO2 emissions by half by 2020. “The consumption of clean energy from renewable sources is one of our basic priorities and we’d like to increase its share of our entire energy consumption in the coming years,” said Přemysl Filip, Senior Manager for Corporate Responsibility at Vodafone and adds: “We want to show that eco energy consumption should be a common business practice.” Under its Green energy project, Vodafone began to contribute to renewable energy more than two years ago.

Under its Green energy project, Vodafone began to contribute to renewable energy more than two years ago. Then its share of green energy was around one-fifth of Vodafone’s total electricity consumption. Thanks to a new agreement with E.ON Energie it has grown to over one-third.

The concrete steps that Vodafone Czech Republic is taking to reduce its carbon dioxide emissions are:

  • Lowering the energy demands of its network
  • The purchase of eco energy from E.ON Energie, a.s.
  • Ecological package transport under DHL’s Go Green program
  • The use of Toyota Prius hybrid company cars, which have a lower impact on the environment
  • Motivating customers to use electronic bills instead of paper (for every ‘My Way’ customer, Vodafone plants a tree in Šumava and Beskydy)
  • Working with technology and software suppliers in the development of energy-saving equipment
  • Offering ecological products to customers (for example, an ecological mobile or a solar charger).
