The operator is expanding its hybrid fleet to the first electric smart ed, in cooperation with Mercedes-Benz and energy company E. ON. From them, it will be on long-term loan to Vodafone.
"The electric car is another example of the practical use of technology for more considerate behavior toward the environment. In addition, drivers find parking a lot easier in the city," said Senior Manager of Corporate Responsibility, Přemysl Filip, adding: "In addition to smart Ed, we use five Toyota Prius hybrid cars, which our staff has been driving since 2008."
Smart Ed will be a standard part of the Vodafone car fleet and all employees who so request will be able to use it.
"E.ON are currently providing Vodafone their supply of 'ECO electricity', electricity produced from renewable sources that Vodafone uses for the operation of their networks. Cooperation in electromobility is another step towards fulfilling the company's energy-saving goals," said Eva Šelepová, project manager of the Smart Mobility from E.ON.
Smart Ed is an ideal vehicle for city streets, thanks to its emission-ess operation and low noise. It can reach a maximum speed of 100 km/h and its range per charge is nearly 140 km. The electric car is recharged from a standard electrical outlet and a full recharge takes about seven to eight hours. At a docking station with the so-called 'rapid-charging', charge time is significantly reduced. E. ON's first public charging station for electric cars is already in Brno's city center shopping mall Gallery Vaňkovka.
Vodafone intends to promote the expansion of electric-powered cars through the construction of public charging stations in underground garages at Vodafone headquarters in Vinice. Both the public and the private stations for Vodafone would need to be planned in collaboration with E.ON and be in operational in a few weeks.
