Vodafone coupons will belong to non-profits for a year

11. May 2009

DMS projects from the non-profit organization Ratolest Brno, the dog training center for the disabled, Helppes, and the Czech Union for Environmental Protection, will appear on Vodafone recharge cards from this summer for the whole year. Vodafone is the first operator in the Czech Republic to enable non-profits to use an entire communications channel to advertise their DMS projects for free. The coupons are used for credit recharging by more than one million Vodafone customers per year. Vodafone decided to dedicate this communications channel to the non-profit sector firstly because, as a responsible company, it will help philanthropic projects to raise money and at the same time connect its business with the needy community in which it works. “The winning DMS projects from ČSOP, Helppes and Ratolest Brno came out of a public tender that we announced in March of this year.

The projects were evaluated by representatives of the operator, workers in the non-profit sector, and the Vodafone Czech Republic Foundation,” says Přemysl Filip, senior Manager for Corporate Responsibility at Vodafone and adds: “In selecting from the 40 applicant projects, we gave emphasis firstly to community benefits of the project and quality graphic design.”

Winning DMS projects:

DMS project Animals in Emergency from the Czech Union for Environmental Protection

The DMS funds are earmarked for life-saving stations for wild animals. These stations are a refuge for wild animals, injured for example by cars, electric shock, or cut by glass. Life-saving stations can be found throughout the Czech Republic and each year are visited by thousands of wild animals.

“We really welcome the chance to be able to advertise our fundraising drive on Vodafone recharge cards free for a year. Despite its novelty, this communications space allows us to contact many people. We hope that sending donation SMSs (DMS) will help the stations in the war for funds to care for injured and abandoned animals. And because it’s not just about money, we also hope that it creates awareness,” says Zuzana Sýkorová, coordinator of the Animals in Emergency campaign from the Czech Union for Environmental Protection.

DMS project Helppes – Dog Training Center for the Disabled

Helppes focuses on the training of helper dogs for the disabled in order to help them be more independent, integrated into society and return to an active life. The DMS funds support the selection, purchase and training of a suitable dog, covers the costs associated with veterinary care and follow-up training with the future owner.

The director of the Helppes organization, said about their victory in the tender: “We applied for the Vodafone tender because we think this project is a great idea and, this way, we are able to not only support it financially, but also through creating awareness. Very few people understand the difference between helper and guide dogs and how they are paid for. In addition, Vodafone has for a long time given us old mobiles for training purposes, bringing a ringing mobile into the training, which really helps us and our clients.”

DMS project Ratolest Brno

The civic society Ratolest Brno helps disadvantaged youth resolve their difficult situations. In addition to running the ‘youth drop-in clubs’, Pavlač and Likusák, Ratolest also provides active and preventative programs for children and youth and, at the same time, informs the wider public of the problems of young people and children from dysfunctional families. The proceeds from their DMS campaign enable them to open their programs to a larger number of clients and improve the lives of endangered children and youth.

“The donation SMS is a safe and comfortable way to contribute to a philanthropic project. For its success, communication is key. For that reason, we look forward to our advertising on recharge cards helping the wider public become aware of the problems of disadvantaged children in addition to obtaining finances for their support,” says Dana Burianová, PR director for Ratolest Brno.

DMS, or donation SMS, celebrates its fifth year this year and with its help, has collected more than CZK 200 million. One DMS costs CZK 30, the intended non-profit organization receives CZK 27. The system is operated by the Donors’ Forum and managed by the DMS Council. Vodafone rech
