Thanks to SMS, hospitals received thousands of liters of blood

21. May 2008

Since January, eight hospitals have participated in the SMS system, financed by the Vodafone Czech Republic Foundation, in order to communicate with blood donors. With the help of this system, transfusion stations can now be set up according to the required blood type, when and where they are most needed, via SMS. Since January, more than 2000 donors were contacted in this way, and they have already donated thousands of liters of blood. The civic association, “Gift of Life”, supported by the Vodafone Foundation’s “On the Move” (Vpohybu) program, recently connected hospitals in Plzeň, Cheb, Zlín, Chomutov, Děčín, Ústí nad Orlicí, Litomyšl, Šumperk and Bruntál with this SMS system. “The ‘Gift of Life’ project was one of the winning projects in the Vpohybu grant program.

“The ‘Gift of Life’ project was one of the winning projects in the Vpohybu grant program. This project both facilitates and speeds up critical communication with potential donors,” says Inga Kaškelyte, Executive Director of the Vodafone Czech Republic Foundation. “Through the Vpohybu program, we look for and support various innovative solutions that use the potential of communication technology to bring help to the needy.”

Between January and April 2008, connected hospitals received more than 2000 SMS, which resulted in the donations of thousands of liters of needed blood.

“Active donors in our database number over two and a half thousand. About three quarters of whom would like to be contacted through SMS,” says a head nurse from the hospital in Litomyšl. “Since January, when we were connected to the system, we sent more than 800 SMS and this system has radically simplified and expedited our work.”

Head Nurse, Libuše Schützová, from the hospital in Cheb had a similar, positive experience with SMS communication. “Before, it took me an hour to print the list of invites to potential donors of a specific blood type from the computer; I then had to send the invitations through the post, and many donors didn’t have enough advance notice to get time off work for their appointment. Now, with the press of a button, I can contact all of the potential donors via SMS. They know immediately when they have an appointment and have the time to accept or decline.”

This project is a reaction to the steadily decreasing number of blood donors. There is a current steady decline in the prestige of voluntary donations and paid donations are a great financial burden on hospitals. Individual donor mobilization is one of the ways, now the most valuable, to obtain this irreplaceable fluid, from now on.
