Small businesses are reluctant to prepare for EU entry, Oskar’s study concludes

16. September 2003

Czech small business owners are worried about the Czech Republic’s accession to the EU although 85% of them support it. They expect competition to get tougher and fear that labour costs will go up and certification procedures will become a lot stricter. However, in spite of these worries, Czech small business owners are not taking significant steps to prepare for the EU entry. Almost half o them (47%) are not preparing at the moment while another 12% are not even planning to. Only 23% of them have been preparing for some time while 17% of them have only started preparing now.

They expect competition to get tougher and fear that labour costs will go up and certification procedures will become a lot stricter. Almost half o them (47%) are not preparing at the moment while another 12% are not even planning to. Only 23% of them have been preparing for some time while 17% of them have only started preparing now.

These are the outcomes of the “Do you have big plans?” survey commissioned by Oskar and conducted by TeliaCall. A total of 9,280 respondents joined the survey while 2,159 questionnaire forms were filled out correctly.

The study also concluded that over 30% of Czech entrepreneurs consider state promotion of small businesses insufficient and feel discriminated against in access to financial resources. A high number of small businesses appear to be under a big pressure as 32% of them expressed worries about domestic competition.

The survey was initiated to enable Oskar to strengthen its position in the business segment by getting to know its customers better. “Our share of the small and medium-sized business segment has been growing at a fast pace. According to Millward Brown, we held 7% of the business market in 2002. By 2003, our share has risen to 18%”, says Igor Prerovsky, Vice President Brand & Communications at Oskar.

The youngest mobile provider has decided to provide consistent support to business customers by offering customized tariffs and services as well as by providing direct financial boosts. Miroslav Tomes of PC Petrol, one of the participants in the Do you have big plans? survey, today accepted a 500,000 Kc cheque as a reward for making a right guess in the competition accompanying the survey. (How many SMSs will go through Oskar’s Internet gateway within a set time period?).

In addition, Oskar will support the shooting of a documentary series entitled The Daring Dozen. The series will introduce 12 entrepreneurs who have managed to make their original ideas a business success. Sequences will be shot by directors working for movie producer Fero Fenič’s Febio company. The series will be aired by Prima TV and published by Týden magazine. Whoever is inspired by the stories of the daring dozen to submit a similarly interesting and viable business plan will be able to sit on the imaginary 13th chair in addition to receiving a 777,000 Kc cash prize to get their business plan off the ground. The results of The 13th Chair contest will be announced in March. Additional information can be found at www.oskar.cz/trinactazidle.
