OSKAR VODAFONE EXPANDS HIGH-SPEED EDGE COVERAGE, AND SIMPLIFIES ACCESS TO SERVICES

05. October 2005

Oskar Vodafone is improving the quality of data as well as voice services in many Czech cities, while simplifying the use of added value services. As of 1 October, EDGE high-speed coverage will expand, and automatically activates selected services for customers. “No longer do customers use their mobile phones for just calling and sending text messages, but they are discovering the benefits of added value services. Most popular among them are access to internet via mobile phone, and MMS messages. In order to make them easier for our customers to access, they will now be included in our basic service offer, and we shall activate them automatically,” says Petr Šindler, Oskar’s spokesperson.

Until now, customers wanting to download data via mobile phone or send MMSs had to activate these services themselves, through of one of the Oskar Self Care channels. This will be now done automatically by Oskar for all customers who have not deactivated the services themselves in the past 2 years. Thus customers will have these services automatically available, as with SMS text messages. Using or not using the service will then be at the discretion of the customer. The automatic activations will be phased in betweenOctober 2005 and April 2006.

As of 1 October, Oskar will also enable faster data transfers via EDGE technology to customers in the following cities: Pilsen, Karlovy Vary, Liberec, and Ústí nad Labem. Oskar launched the EDGE technology this year in March, together with an unlimited data transfer tariff. Customers in Prague, Brno, Ostrava, Olomouc, Hradec Králové, České Budějovice, Pardubice, Pilsen, Karlovy Vary, Liberec, and Ústí nad Labem may now download data 3 times faster compared to the GPRS technology. And the expansion will continue.

Thanks to the launches of the EDGE technology and the unlimited data transfer tariff, Connect Steady, the volume of data transfer in Oskar’s network has grown by almost 860% since 1 March this year.

Pictures of Oskar BTS and EDGE card are available in the press release.
