Launched in October 1999, the World Communication Awards have been designed as a unique and prestigious way of recognizing excellence in the high-profile communications industry. Judging panel chairman, Michael Potter, a pioneering campaigner for pro-competitive legislation and founder of Paradigm Ventures, a telecoms and technology venture capital company stated “The number of entries is impressive, given that we’re all aware of the difficulty of the industry being in meltdown mode”.

There are two methods used to determine the winners of the World Communication Awards: the Winning Carriers Survey, which is an in-depth study of the views of 65,000 industry executives, including 15,000 enterprise users that select the Best Carrier, New Carrier and Wireless/Mobile Operator categories. Separately, an adjudicated judging process determines the winners of the remaining categories.

This year’s panel of judges has been selected from a variety of companies and industry bodies for their reputation as key opinion-leaders within the communications industry. The judges include: Michael Potter (Independent Consultant), Pekka Tarjanne (Former Secretary General for ITU (International Telecommunication Union), Ernst Weiss (Former Chariman for International Telecommunication Users Group), Brian West (Chairman for The European VPN Users Association), David Isenberg, (Independent Consultant), Audrey Mandela (Independent Consultant), Vinton Cerf (Internet Society/WorldCom), Julian Bright (Editor of ROAM Magazine, EMAP), Bridget Cosgrave (Deputy Director General for ETSI: European Telecommunications Institute), Melvin Dick (Global Head of Technology, for Media and Communications Industry Practice for Andersen), Laina Raveendran Greene (Chairwoman Asia Pacific Policy and Legal Forum), Hervé Nora (VP Telecoms Cigref).
