Oskar in only 10 months demonstrates phenomenal growth and strong leadership
Oskar exceeded the 300.000 customer mark only 10 months after its commercial launch. According to telecom analyst estimates, Oskar’s market share now approximates 7% at the year-end. Oskar has thus become by far the most successful mobile operator when we compare the first year of operations of all mobile carriers in the Czech Republic. “We are very proud that Oskar is one of the fastest growing third entrant GSM operators world-wide.
“We are very proud that Oskar is one of the fastest growing third entrant GSM operators world-wide. Having this kind of success in the Czech Republic, a country readily acknowledged as having one of the most developed and competitive wireless telecommunications markets in Europe is both a challenge and a reward. From the first days of our launch in March 2000 we were convinced that we offered a very competitive alternative to the public,” says Al Tolstoy, Chief Executive Officer. “Clearly, people in the Czech Republic have responded with enthusiasm to Oskar’s brand, our very competitive prices, state-of-art wireless technologies providing world class service, VAS and full network coverage.“
According to the highly respected EMC World Cellular Database, Oskar became the fastest-developing third operator in Central and Eastern Europe. 6 months after its commercial launch Oskar had acquired 150.000 subscribers and reached a 4,7% market share surpassing the 4,4% market share achieved by Vodafone Hungary, in the same time frame.
From the outset, Oskar’s objective was to make available the benefits of modern wireless services to everyone in the Czech Republic. Oskar was the first mobile carrier to offer per-second billing, no activation fees, same prices throughout the day, no distinction between peak and off-peak hours, no contracts for the purchase of services and easy-to-understand rate plans. At the same time, Oskar introduced Direct Delivery based on simple over-the-phone ordering, as well as the first E-commerce site and Oskaravans, mobile stores taking products and services to the smallest communities. Oskar already offers the services of 72 roaming partners in 37 countries of the world.
Český Mobil a.s. became the third mobile network operator in the Czech Republic after being granted a GSM 900/1800 dual band license by the Czech government in October 1999 and launched commercial operations on March 1, 2000 under the brand name Oskar.
Český Mobil a.s. is a member of telecommunications group of Canadian-based Telesystem International Wireless (TIW). TIW is a rapidly growing, global mobile communications operator with over 3.9 million subscribers worldwide. The Company's shares are listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange ("TIW") and NASDAQ ("TIWI").
TIW is deploying a pan-European digital specialized mobile radio (ESMR) network through its subsidiary Dolphin Telecom plc. Dolphin currently offers ESMR services in the United Kingdom, in addition to analog SMR services in the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Belgium, Spain and Portugal.
