Less than a fifth of employees can work from their home

27. July 2011

Almost every second employee in the Czech Republic can flexibly organize at least a part of their working hours. However, only 17 per cent of companies allow their employees to work from their home. These companies usually offer flexible working hours as well. They find it satisfactory and would recommend it to others. They particularly appreciate increased work effectiveness and less employee absence.

Such are the results of the Vodafone Zoom survey which included 351 respondents from companies with more than ten employees. The survey was conducted by the Data Collect agency for Vodafone.

The respondents coming from the companies which do not offer the possibility of working from home mostly state that it is because the character of their work does not allow it. Therefore only 4 per cent of these companies consider offering such possibility in the near future.

The companies whose employees can work from their home usually have several years of experience with such practice. A third of the companies have stated that they have been offering this possibility for more than five years.

Who and how often can work from their home:

  • Most often, it is less than a quarter of employees who are allowed by the company to work from their home.
  • These are mainly employees working in managerial or specialized positions.
  • Only 43 per cent of employees working in administrative positions are allowed to work from their home.
  • Companies allow their employees to work from home mostly in the case of well-founded personal reasons.
  • 30 per cent of employees who are allowed to work from their home can do so any time they need.

77 per cent of companies provide their employees with a notebook and distant Internet connection to use when working from home.

Most companies do not check on their employees when working from home, they only evaluate the results of their work. However, two fifths of the companies require their employees to be available outside their working hours.

Company owners and managing directors work from home more often than their employees
51 per cent of company owners and managing directors work at least once a week out of their office, mostly from their home. 11 per cent of respondents also stated that they work while travelling abroad.
