What are low threshold clubs?

Low threshold clubs and social work in the field are providing new methods of social aid in the Czech Republic that differ from the traditional institutional model of social work. They are often erronously associated only to problems with drugs but the range of its focus is much more diverse – the clubs offer elements of social aid, prevention and free-time activities.

The clubs offer children and youths active ways of spending their free time, a safe place for self-realization as well as diminishing the risks related to growing up. Low threshold is the pivotal principle of these services. Low-threshold status is the basic principle of the clubs – there is no need to register or pay entry when visiting them. Streetwowrk and low threshold clubs fill in “blank spaces” of the contact of society and youths.

The Vodafone Foundation is the co-organizer and general sponsor of the awareness campaign; the foundation has been collaborating with the prestigious non-profit organizations Rozvoje Občanské Společnost/Civic Development Foundation (NROS) and the VIA Foundation in organizing the campaign.

„Supporting low threshold clubs is one of the priorities of the Vodafone CR Foundation. This year we will provide 8.5 million crowns to low threshold clubs by way of our Vpoho grant program,“ explains Inge Kaskelyte, director of the Vodafone CR Foundation.

The patron of the campaign is moderator Pavel Andel. Why did he decide to participate? „Today’s life is not inclined towards people communicating in the traditional ways – speaking or personal contact. An entire generation of youths has developed that could be overwhelmed by this period of time; only some of them are able to manage on their own,“ says Pavel Andel.
