During the bike ride, Vodafone offers the first hand-held charger in the Czech Republic

14. September 2010

Exclusively in Vodafone-branded shops, customers can get a hand-held charger from the operator during European Mobility Week. For the fourth consecutive year, Vodafone invites its customers to Prague's Critical Mass rides, including the related street festival, 'Experience the City Differently'. The initiative is organized by Auto*Mat for Saturday, the 25th of September. Only a few days earlier, on Wednesday, the 22nd of September, a cycling tour will also take place in the Pardubice region. “For all our customers who come to our stores by bike or present a valid public transport ticket, and use at least 350 crowns per month of our services, or decide to increase their spending to this value, we have prepared a dynamo charger for them during the week of the 20th to the 26th of September," said Přemysl Philip, Senior Manager for Corporate Responsibility at Vodafone.

"Today the city is suffering from a surfeit of cars, which occupy space and burden people with noise and air pollution. Corporate employee commuting greatly contributes to the traffic. It is therefore necessary, especially for really large companies, to not turn a blind eye to this problem and to try to see how they can contribute to a better urban environment," says Michal Křivohlávek from the Auto*Mat initiative.

The carless Prague street festival, 'Experience the City Differently', will take place in the city on Saturday, the 25th September from noon until 10 PM on Jugoslavská, Rumunská, Londýnská, Americká, and Belgická streets, including parts of Náměstí Míru and Tylovo Náměstí. Participants will meet at 3 PM for the big autumn bike ride at Náměstí Míru.

Among the additional related events in Prague include:

  • A showcase of unique and unusual bikes in the Bike Parade
  • Examples of the use of bicycles for the handicapped
  • Street theater, performance art and installation pieces
  • NGO stalls
  • Children's attractions and interesting creative workshops
  • A marketplace of products from young Czech designers
  • Public debate with candidates for the new Mayor and the current Mayor of Prague

The organizer of the Critical Mass rides in Pardubice is the nonprofit organization, 'City on Wheels'. The opening of the event will happen on Pernštýnské Náměstí from 9 AM and the start of the Pardubice bike ride is 6 PM.

Among the additional activities in Pardubice, there will be:

  • The new sport, bike-polo
  • A presentation of alternative transportation proposals
  • Concerts (Buty, Ready Kirken, Terne Čhave, and others)
  • Attractions for kids and programs for schools

Just like last year, Vodafone, together with the Vodafone Czech Republic Foundation, became the partner for Auto*mat, which organizes the bike ride in Prague and also supports the 'City on Wheels' initiative, the bike ride organizer in Pardubice. Both events will take place with the participation of dozens of Vodafone employees, including representatives from its top management.

In the Czech Republic, Mobility Week 2009 involved 90 cities in total, placing us in fifth place in Europe after Austria (nearly 400 cities), Spain and France. Globally, the campaign took place in over 1800 cities in 39 countries including, for example, Canada, Japan and Brazil.
