As the first operator to do so, Vodafone secures its services with DNSSEC technology

24. November 2011

Vodafone was the first Czech mobile operator to enhance the safety of its domain www.vodafone.cz and its web services with DNSSEC technology. It provides protection against website tampering via the misuse of data in the Domain Name System (DNS) and prevents, for example, the possibility of undetected attempts to manipulate content on the site or obtain sensitive information via the users login to online services. "We are pleased that with this technology we can increase the safety of our customers.

The introduction of DNSSEC technology was also smooth because we've accomplished it with specialists from CZ.NIC," says Jan Kočiš, Information Security Architect at Vodafone.

Users of Vodafone's online services with the security of DNSSEC can be convinced two ways. On the www.dnssec.cz site is an automatic test, which displays a green or red icon showing the key users, whether their connection is, respectively, not safe. The second option offers an add-on for Firefox, which can be downloaded for free from www.dnssec-validator.cz. This program allows you to control whether or not the currently visited domain is protected, again displaying an icon key, this time directly in the address bar of your browser window.

"The introduction of DNSSEC is not at all challenging, either financially, time-wise or regarding capacity. CZ.NIC offers a helping hand to anyone who is interested in implementing this technology. In our teaching center we have a practical course that presents this technology almost from A to Z. Important information, including instructions can be found on the www.dnssec.cz site," said Ondřej Filip, CEO of the CZ.NIC association.

DNSSEC technology in the Czech Republic since October 2008. To protect your and your clients it is used, for example, by the Internet portal of the Lidový noviny, lidovky.cz, as well as the network of regional media denik.cz grouped under the domain and all the news servers of the Economia group. Other companies using DNSSEC include one of the largest online bookshops, Kosmas.cz and Hypoteční Banka.

About DNSSEC technology

DNSSEC is an extension of the DNS system, which increases the security services of domain names. The principle of the DNS namespace is a translation of Internet addresses, such as www.nic.cz or www.dobradomena.cz, to the numerical addresses, which the computer understands and through which they can secure displayed web pages, send an e-mail, Internet telephony and other common Internet services. DNSSEC increases security when using DNS by preventing smuggling, false, altered or incomplete data about domain names. CZ.NIC, as administrator of domain registry for .CZ and ENUM has introduced this technology to the security holders of these domains and the Czech Internet users in 2008. To date, DNSSEC protects 150,109 domains ending with .cz, which represent 17 percent of the total number of Czech domains. This makes the Czech Republic the world leader in the deployment of DNSSEC security technology. More information online at www.dnssec.cz.
